NATIONAL BOYS & GIRLS CLUB WEEK (MARCH 25-31, 2007)
The Boys & Girls Club of Danville celebrated National Boys & Girls Club Week from March 25th – 31st. This year’s theme focused on the five core program areas; Character & Leadership Development, Education & Career Development, Health & Life Skills, Sports, Fitness, & Recreation and the Arts. During this event, we stressed the importance of each of these areas as a means to achieving success. Monday through Thursday, members were required to participate in Power Hour (our homework assistance and tutoring program) like they normally do. Those who successfully completed their homework and demonstrated a positive attitude were then allowed to take part in our special events.
On Monday (Character & Leadership Day), we held a Pep Rally to kick-off the week as well as a Club-wide cleaning of Garfield Park to demonstrate citizenship and community involvement. Members wore their Club T-shirts and received Boys & Girls Club bracelets. Tuesday (Education & Career Day), we hosted an open house and reception for all District 118 Faculty and a Career Fair. Educators received Boys & Girls Club of Danville pens and members received Boys & Girls Club of Danville pencils and erasers. Representatives from the Danville Fire Department, Acton & Snyder LLP, District 118, Caldwell Banker, and the Club answered questions about the professions our members have shown the most interest in: firefighting, law, teaching, real estate, and social work. On Wednesday (Sports, Fitness, & Recreation Day), members participated in an obstacle course, fitness stations and a Staff v. Member kickball game; those who completed activities received miniature bouncing sports balls. Thursday (Arts Day) we held mini film-festival where members watched the movie Happy Feet and ate popcorn. On Friday (Health & Life Skills Day), Community Church of God hosted an Easter party for members and the Club held an open house from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Members participated in an Easter egg hunt, played games, and had their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny. Chili and desserts were served. The week-long celebration also included a penny drive to raise funds for the Club. Members raised over $80, and the K-1st grade classes won by collecting nearly $16 in pennies!
